Baby to Adult: Determining Coat Color and Type in Rats

This chart displays images of kittens in the first week of life up to the fourth week.  Some colors change after a rat molts.  In these cases, I have supplied a picture to show how this change affects the over all coat color.   These pictures are intended to help you discern color and see how color changes before and after molting.

Day 1-12

 Week 2-4

 Black

The kitten on top is a black.

Agouti

This picture is an example of an agouti, a cinnamon, and a cinnamon pearl.

 Russian Blue Agouti

The Russian Blue Agouti color starts very blue with a hint of "tannish brown" and then after molting the blend of the two colors becomes apparent.

 Russian Blue

 American Blue

The kitten on top is an American Blue and the kitten on the bottom is a Russian Blue for comparison.

 Mink

 Cinnamon

The Cinnamon Kitten is in the center of the photo.

Cinnamon Pearl

 Albino

  Burmese

 Siamese

  Himalayan

The kitten in the upper center is the Himalayan.

The points do not come in until the molt.

Pearl Merle

The kitten that is in the center near the cinnamon colored kitten is a pearl.

Black Eyed White

The upper  left hand kitten is a pink eyed white and the lower right hand kitten is a black eyed white.  You can see the pigment, in the dark eye, through the skin.

This is the same kitten that is in the lower right hand corner of the picture to the left.  this kitten has black eyes and pure white coat.

 Black eyed Siamese

The kitten on the top is a black eyed siamese newborn.  The kitten on the bottom is a red eyed siamese litter mate.

 Midnight Blue

Distinguishing Coat Type

 Week 1 Week 2-3

 Smooth

This is a litter of smooth coat kittens.  Their whiskers will not have curl to them.

 Hairless

The hairless kitten will develop a thin coat of hair.  They will also have extremely curled whiskers.

As the kittens grow older, their coat thin out and eventually as reach maturity they become more and more hairless.  In some lines, hair will still grow on the extremites.

Double Teddy Rex

The first clue that a kitten might have a rex coat is the curl in the whisker as evidenced by this photo.

As the coat develops, the curl becomes more pronounced.
