Healthy * Friendly * Beautiful New Additions From Our Family to Your Family

Adoption Procedure

Please read the information on this page carefully, before contacting us.

Once you find a litter that you are interested in, contact me via email, right away to find out if they are available.  Attach a completed adoption questionnaire (found at the bottom of the page).

After I receive your adoption questionnaire, I will read through your responses carefully and contact you.  If you are accepted, I will prompt you to submit an adoption deposit to secure your place on the waiting list.

We ask for an adoption fee that covers the cost required to raise the kittens properly. Furthermore, we make the effort to drive to various locations making travel easier for adopters.  When people back out at the last minute we have wasted our time, gas, wear and tear on our car, and not to mention put stress on our ratties.  Due to several last minute cancellations, we must ask that all potential adopters submit a 50% deposit on the total adoption fee in order to reserve.  This is easy to do as we are Pay Pal verified.  You can also request our address to mail a check or money order.   Please note deposits are non-refundable.  To make your deposit now, please click on the PayPal button above. To learn more about the adoption fee and how to post a deposit please click: Adoption fee info

All adopters are asked to sign an adoption contract.  This includes our pet rats, rescues, and breeders.  We encourage you to read our contract thoroughly and determine if you are able to commit to the requirements.  The day we meet, you will be asked to sign a copy for our records.  To read and print a copy of the contract for yourself, please click: Adoption Contract

Which Gender is Best for me? Choosing a Male or Female

Hey Boys and Girls!!! So, you have decided that you would like to have rats as a pet! You researched information on the behavior, proper care, monthly expenses involved, and decided they were the best choice for you and your family.  The next obvious step, is to select a gender.  There are many pros and cons that come with owning either a male or female. In some cases, if you are willing, you can also have a rat neutered or spayed, and in doing so, keep a mixed gender group.  If you are interested, please email me for more information.  No matter which gender you decide on, your new friends will surely love and bond with you!

Click on the girl and boy picture below to find out what the pros and cons are for each gender.

Reserving a Kitten

When the kittens are four weeks, I will send out an email to people who are on the waiting list.  Pictures of the kittens will be posted on the litter page, as well as, in the live journal to help you make your selection.  I will ask the adopters, in order, to specify which ratlet they would like to reserve.  I will ask them to respond with in 24-48 hours.

If you are initially reserving one or more kittens and you no longer wish to reserve the same number, please contact me.  Any available kittens will be offered to the next person on the waiting list.

If it turns out that you are not able to adopt a kitten from one litter, because their are not enough of one particular gender, your name will be moved to the next possible litter.  You can adopt a kitten from two different litters.

Standards vs. Dwarf Rats

  • If you think that you are interested in adopting a dwarf sized rat, please review the following page before being asked to be on our waiting list. Dwarfs have a different personality style and this provides you with important information that can help you make your choice.
  • Already Have Rats At Home?

    Picking-up Your New Friend

The standard sized rats are ready to go home at 6 weeks and the dwarf ratties are ready to go home at 8 weeks. All rats must go home in pairs, even if you have rats at home already.  Due to the social nature of rats, they should not be kept alone, even during the quarantine period.  Some exceptions apply.

Be sure to bring an appropriate travel box.  We do not provide one for you, however; you may purchase one from us for $13.00.  It should be large enough, comfortable, and sturdy (with a closing top) so that your new friends don't escape on the way to their new home! In addition, if you are traveling more than two hours to return home, plan to have apples, carrots, and water bottle available. This will help to keep your new buddies hydrated, no matter the weather.

Word of Caution!  If you need to leave your car with your rats in the carrier, park in the shade, have appropriate ventilation, or take them with you.  The rats will suffer horribly from the heat and die!!! Please don't ever make this mistake!  The same applies to cold weather.  When you turn your car off and the heat stops, you run the risk of a temperature drop that may cause death as well. During winter rattie deliveries, it is advisable to bring blankets with you to reduce the risk of draft.  To avoid risking such a horrible event, be prepared for the weather and try not stop for more than 10 minutes unless you have someone who can stay in the car and keep it running to maintain a comfortable temperature!

Required: Please be prepared to sign a pet only contract upon picking up your new rattie.  Our rats cannot be bred unless we discussed it prior to purchase. I have you sign it for my records.  i ask that you  print a copy for yourself; they are available online. Read it ahead of time.

We will then schedule an appropriate pick up day and time.  You must pick up the rattie within 1 months time, from the date agreed upon or I reserve the right to find a new home for them.  Deposits will not be refunded.

Leave about 30-40 minutes when we meet depending on your level of experience in rat care.  It allows us time to discuss important information and allows me time to answer your questions as well.

Please email me for possible solutions!I would be willing to drive in your direction for compensation.

    Pet-Only and Breeding Contracts

For some people, breeding is a way to preserve a lasting memory of their beloved pet, for a couple of generations.  However, rat breeding is not simply putting one cute rattie with another, and hoping for the best!  The continual improvement and dedication to a program over time, for your rats, requires thoughtful selection of mates in your breeding program and an understanding of genetics and disease.

The ratties I adopt out are not show quality and therefore, will be registered as pet-quality with the NARR database. The rats I use for particular matings are hand picked for their health, personality, color-type/markings (in that order) and a goal that i have set for this rattery.  While each generation is an improvement on the last, only select rats from certain litters should be used to breed from.

When a potential adopter approaches me as a breeder, I ask that you email me first before making a request for any rats.  I will respond with 24 - 48 hours.

    Are You Ready?

It is very exciting to adopt a new rattie into your home!

Please make sure that you are really prepared by having the proper sized cage, food and water bottles all set up before you come home with the rattie.

The rat will be approximately 5 weeks of age when you adopt.  Still a tiny kitten!  They can easily squeeze through 1 in spacing on cage bars.

A cage that has 1/4 in spacing, can safely be used until they can move up to a larger "ferret-sized" cage. See cage above.

Also ask yourself, how many ratties will you have in each cage?  Do you have enough food dishes and water bottles!? Ideally, you should have at least two or three food dishes and water bottles in a cage that houses four ratties!

You will receive a small bag of the food, when you pick up your rattie. Before the food runs out, prepare the ratties digestive tract by phasing out one diet and phasing in another healthy diet.  Or simply continue using the same mix by purchasing it from us or makig your own.  This website lists ingredients that are found in the food I will be giving you.  Please try to continue to offer the same fresh, high quality ingredients for optimum health and growth!

    Rescue Partner Program

We wanted to give back to the community.  So, The Everwild Rattery, is donating one dollar from every total purchase, that is sold from The Everwild Rattery, both rattie and Everwild Boutique, to The Lolly Pop Farm in the form of purchased items for ratties and other small animals.

Located in Fairport, NY the Lolly Pop Farm is a pet rescue and adoption center.  We have adopted from this facility in the past. We are not affiliated with them, we just love the fact that they help all critters great and small, in their beautiful facility.

Please visit their website by clicking on the picture to the left.
